GEO awareness

Manufacturer geo data supplements but does not replace national UTM checks.

Overview

Geo-awareness is a manufacturer-implemented system that warns or automatically restricts flights in certain areas based on GPS coordinates. DJI GEO, Parrot AirCockpit and other manufacturer systems use their own proprietary databases.

Important: geo-awareness is a supplementary safety tool, not a substitute for legal compliance. Manufacturer geo-awareness data may be outdated or incomplete — it does not replace the mandatory utm.ans.lt check.

Rules

EASA and TKA require pilots to check geo-zones through official national channels (Lithuania: utm.ans.lt) before every flight. A manufacturer's geo-awareness system does not relieve the pilot of this obligation.

The geo-awareness system may prevent flight in certain locations without an unlock code or procedure. However, the physical ability to fly after unlocking does not mean the flight is legally permitted.

Licence

The geo-awareness topic appears in A1/A3 and A2 exam questions. You must understand: what geo-awareness is, how it differs from official geo-zone systems and what pilot obligations exist regardless of the manufacturer's system.

The common wrong answer is the claim that a geo-awareness system fully ensures flight legality. The correct answer: the pilot is always responsible, and geo-awareness is only a supplementary tool.

Next step

Before every flight, use both sources: manufacturer geo-awareness as a quick check and utm.ans.lt as the authoritative official source. If they conflict — follow utm.ans.lt.

Update drone firmware periodically — this also updates the manufacturer's geo-awareness database. Despite updates, the official check remains mandatory.

Frequently asked questions

Can I fly if the manufacturer's geo-awareness prohibits it?
The manufacturer's system may have an unlock procedure. However, even after unlocking — if an official TKA/EASA zone prohibits flight, it remains legally prohibited.
Are geo-awareness and geo-zone the same thing?
No. A geo-zone is an official regulatory concept (R, P, CTR zones). Geo-awareness is a manufacturer-implemented system whose data may not match official geo-zone boundaries.
