Drones on the beach

Overview

Beaches are one of the most popular flying locations in summer — and also one of the most complex from a regulatory perspective. In season, beaches are crowded, and the boundaries between private and public space are often unclear.

Additional considerations: Baltic Sea nature reserves, UNESCO-protected areas (e.g. Curonian Spit), seasonal restrictions for migratory bird protection and GDPR privacy requirements.

Rules

The Curonian Spit National Park has very strict restrictions — drone flights may require a special permit from the Neringa municipal administration. Check utm.ans.lt and contact the park authority.

GDPR applies when photographing people on a beach — they are identifiable without consent. Commercial filming projects especially must assess privacy risk and have an appropriate data protection policy.

Licence

In a busy summer beach there will typically be many people — making A2 distance rules (30 m) highly relevant. If there is an assembly of people (crowds) — overflight is prohibited even with A2.

Commercial beach filming (coastal real estate, advertising content) requires all standard commercial requirements: registration, A2 certificate, insurance, GDPR compliance.
