Drone curriculum for schools

A school UAV programme covers aviation fundamentals, safety culture, EASA regulation and practical flying skills. In a STEM context, drones demonstrate physics, maths and programming in a hands-on setting.

Start with theory: what is a UAS, how does it work, what rules govern it. Move to practice only after: simulators first, real aircraft later.

Safety requirements for school programmes

Schools should appoint a responsible instructor holding a valid A1/A3 or A2 certificate. The instructor bears operator responsibility for all student flights and safety protocols.

For flights on school grounds or nearby spaces, establish defined safety perimeters, verify geo-zones and assess weather before every session. Log each flight session.

Licence requirements

The instructor must hold the relevant certificate. Students without their own certificate can fly only under the direct supervision of a licensed instructor who takes on operator responsibility.

If the school intends to prepare students for the A1/A3 test, the A2STS B2B platform gives multi-user access with instructor-facing progress reports — ideal for a UAV training class.

A2STS for school teams

A2STS offers group access for institutions and schools. One platform — multiple students, instructor access to progress dashboards and the ability to track who is ready for the exam.

The B2B package suits vocational schools and universities alike. Contact us via /contact for a custom quote based on student count and your teaching programme.

Frequently asked questions

Can students fly a drone at school without a licence?
Only under direct supervision of a licensed instructor, who assumes operator responsibility. Without instructor supervision, unlicensed individuals cannot fly aircraft ≥250 g.
What age is suitable for a school drone course?
Theory and simulators work well from age 12–14. Real aircraft flights are recommended at 14+, but the decision depends on school policy and instructor assessment.
