EU drone pilot license: complete EASA guide
EASA harmonised remote pilot training across 30+ member states. One A2 certificate issued in any member state is valid EU-wide - but each exam still runs through your National Aviation Authority.

1. Which exams apply in the EU
The main path starts with A1/A3 theory, then moves to A2 and STS depending on your operation type. Each level unlocks different operational scope.
The system lets pilots grow step by step from basic to complex scenarios. The key is matching qualifications to your actual missions.
2. Exact exam metrics
A1/A3 format: 40 questions in 40 minutes with a 75 % pass threshold. A2 format: 30 questions in 30 minutes. STS format: 60 questions in 60 minutes with the same 75 % pass mark.
These metrics matter for theory and for structuring practice. The closer your simulator matches official format, the more realistic your preparation.
4. Effective preparation model
Stage one: theory and topic tests. Stage two: mistake review. Stage three: full timed simulations. This model works for both A2 and STS.
Book the exam only when results are stable. One high score does not prove you are ready for the official test.
5. Managing qualifications after passing
Plan renewals from the start. A2 and STS qualifications are typically managed on a 5-year cycle under current EASA rules.
Ongoing theory refresh keeps you ready for new projects and renewal without a last-minute scramble.
