Certificate renewal
Certificates last 5 years — plan renewal before expiry.

Certificate validity
A1/A3, A2 and STS certificates issued under the EASA Open-category framework are valid for 5 years from their date of issue. Once expired, you are not permitted to fly under that subcategory — this applies equally to hobby and commercial operations.
Your expiry date appears in your NAA operator account. In Lithuania, log in at utm.ans.lt. Check it at least three months before it lapses, since exam appointment slots can have waiting periods.
NAA renewal process
A1/A3 renewal requires re-sitting the online competency test — no new study programme is mandated. The format remains 40 questions at ≥75%. You can re-sit online via your NAA portal without attending in person.
A2 renewal requires attending your NAA premises to sit a fresh 30-question theoretical exam (≥75%). Bring valid ID and your previous certificate. Book through utm.ans.lt or your national NAA system.
If your certificate has already expired, contact your NAA directly — additional steps or extended wait times may apply before a new slot is confirmed.
A2 and STS renewal
For A2, you must re-submit a self-declaration of practical skill acquisition if you are now operating a different C-class aircraft. The theoretical exam conditions are identical to the original sitting.
STS-01 and STS-02 renewals are conducted through an accredited training organisation and require updated theoretical and practical assessments. Check your NAA website for any changes to STS renewal requirements following EASA updates.
Planning ahead
Set a calendar reminder 4 years after your issue date. That window gives you comfortable time to prepare, book and receive your renewed certificate. Use A2STS mock exams to refresh knowledge before re-sitting.
If you hold both A1/A3 and A2 certificates, their expiry dates may differ — track each separately. Staggering renewals across different years avoids a simultaneous double cost.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I fly while my renewal application is being processed?
- No. Once your certificate has lapsed, flying under that subcategory is not permitted until the renewed certificate is officially issued.
- Do I need a new practical skills declaration when renewing A2?
- Yes, if you are using a different C-class aircraft from your original declaration. If the aircraft class is unchanged, check current NAA guidance — requirements can vary.
