Overview

Drone mapping (photogrammetry) uses aerial images to create accurate 2D or 3D models of terrain or objects. Applications include agriculture (crop monitoring), construction (progress tracking), topography and cultural heritage documentation.

Mapping missions typically involve multiple automated flight passes over an area in a grid pattern. This requires a reliable aircraft, mission planning software and a certificate matching the operational category.

Rules

For mapping in rural areas away from people, an A2 certificate is generally sufficient. If the mapping zone is in residential areas or close to people, an STS authorisation or Specific operational authorisation is required.

An automated grid flight is still a VLOS operation — the pilot must maintain visual contact with the aircraft. If the mission covers areas where VLOS is not possible, it becomes BVLOS and requires a separate Specific authorisation.

Licence

For commercial mapping work you need: operator registration, at minimum an A2 (or STS) certificate, and commercial OC insurance. These apply regardless of whether the deliverable is a 2D map or a 3D model.

Specialist photogrammetry software (Pix4D, Agisoft Metashape, DJI Terra) is a tool, not a substitute for regulatory compliance. For full registration requirements see /blog/drone-operator-registration-eu.

Next step

Start with an A2 certificate — it provides the foundation for commercial mapping work. If you plan missions over large areas or urban terrain, evaluate STS or Specific category options.

Mapping professionals should maintain a drone flight log and mission documentation — important both for regulatory compliance and client confidence.

Frequently asked questions

Does an agricultural mapping mission require a Specific permit?
Usually not, if the mission is in a rural area away from people and stays within A2 Open-category limits. However, always evaluate the specific case and check geo-zones.
Which drone is suitable for a mapping mission?
Multirotors (DJI Phantom, Matrice series) and fixed-wing aircraft for large areas are most common. Aircraft selection depends on mission area, accuracy requirements and your current certificates.
