Overview

Motors won't spin — arming blocked by app or FC.

DJI geo-fence, national UTM map, EU Remote ID, Betaflight arming flags.

Symptoms

Typical "Drone won't arm" signs in flight, app or OSD:

  • Arming disabled message
  • Throttle inactive
  • Red error in Betaflight/DJI
  • App error list — every red line before arming.

Common causes

Before replacing parts, rule out software, mechanical and environmental causes:

  • Throttle not at minimum
  • Prearm checks failed (GPS, compass, accelerometer)
  • Geo-zone lock
  • Failsafe active

Tools needed

Prepare before diagnostics — saves time in the field:

  • National UTM map
  • NAA operator ID
  • DJI Fly geo unlock (if permitted)

Step-by-step fix

Work safely: battery off when working on ESC/motors; props removed; after repair — VLOS test flight.

  • DJI: check error list in app — resolve each item.
  • Betaflight: CLI `status` — clear ARMING_DISABLED flags.
  • Throttle minimum, props off for bench test.

Additional diagnostics

App error list — every red line before arming.

Compare DJI geo with official NAA map.

RID broadcast — third-party RID reader for test.

When to contact service

If any of the following apply — do not fly and contact authorised service:

  • Official geo-zone prohibits flight — DJI unlock is not enough.
  • Remote ID error for commercial flight.
  • Aircraft flips after prop check — mechanical/service.

Prevention

Prevention reduces failure risk and supports EASA Open / VLOS compliance:

  • Preflight checklist
  • Props off on bench

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to fly with "Drone won't arm"?
No if the fault affects navigation, power, ESC or link. Fix on the ground first, then conduct a VLOS test flight in open area.
How long does diagnosis take?
Most “Drone won't arm” cases — 15–45 min on the ground. Complex ones (firmware, hardware) may need 1–2 h and service.
Must I register repair with the NAA?
No mandatory repair registration, but a maintenance log is recommended for commercial operations.
