Custom build classification
Self-built UAS is classified by actual take-off mass with battery and camera, not the DIY label.
Private build >250 g with camera — register operator and aircraft with your NAA.
Parts and responsibility
The pilot is responsible for compatibility: prop size, VTX power, RX protocol. Use /fpv/build-configurator.
After changing VTX or antennas — verify EU EIRP limits and geo-zones before flight.
Licence
A1/A3 is the baseline. A2 applies when flying closer to people with C2-class aircraft. Registration — /blog/drone-operator-registration-eu.

Frequently asked questions
- Is DIY exempt from registration?
- No — mass and camera trigger the duty, not whether you built or bought it.
- Do I need CE marking?
- New C-class parts must comply; custom builds are often legacy class — check A3/A2 limits.
